EARTH FRIENDLY NUTRITION PROGRAM
When we were visiting the village of Salima, we saw hundreds of people waiting in line for a delivery truck that was slated to bring bags of government issued fertilizer to the community. People waited for hours. The truck never came. We want to change this uncertainty and help the people of Malawi receive the tools and instruction they really need to plant and sustain farm produce. Most villages have the ability to support agriculture but need seed and instruction on how to fertilize and irrigate land for themselves.
Components of the project include:
1. Composting: Recycling items to create natural fertilizer
- Ashes from wood burning cooking fires
- Food waste such as skins and rotted fruit
- Animal waste
- Decomposing leaves
2. Nutritional Diversity: Low maintenance crops Nutritional diversity:
- New crops that will expand the food base for children including:
carbohydrates such as plantains and yams.
- Incorporating low maintenance vegetables such as tomatoes, okra and
collard greens
- Introducing alternative protein crops such as soy beans and peanuts
3. Irrigation: Maintaining crops to harvest
- Rain water catch during the wet season for use during the dry season
- Using local bamboo stick for use as piping for crop irrigation
4. Quick and easy self-sufficient gardening
- Indigenous crops for the weather and soil
- Education of edible local plants
All our projects attempt to improve nutritional conditions while mindful of recycling and producing minimal negative impact on the local and world environment.
